Chris ReaThe best classic motor racing event in the World took place for the 12th time on 18th to 20th September.  Despite the fact that this was rather late for the event, the weather was good with rain arriving late on Saturday after a rather hot and sunny day.

Both the cars and the aviation were fantastic and the place was packed out.  In fact the heaving crowds were the only real problem.  Happy crowds though and in their midst, a team of actors, dressed in period (50s to 60s) costumes mingled.  The sight of a spy peering over a copy of the Times was distinctly odd, but then I don't remember the 60s, having been there, so perhaps spies were everywhere in those days.

The air displays included the Battle of Britain flight, the only flying Vulcan  'V' bomber and the last public flight of the Vickers Vimy that is soon to be imprisoned in a museum.

Celebrities were there, Stirling Moos of course (just turned 80 and still racing) even Lord Mandelson.  Our picture shows Chris Rea, rock star and petrol head in action.

He said, "I'm going to chop off the bottom of one of your trouser legs and put it in a library." I thought, "That's a turn-up for the books."  [Tommy Cooper, 1922-1984]
