Apparently the rules of tie wearing are ...

  1. Avoid wearing clip-on ties, they are unprofessional.
  2. The front point of your tie should be just long enough to touch the waist of your trousers.
  3. Your tie should be darker than the colour of your shirt.
  4. Avoid wearing ties that are too bright.
  5. The general width of a tie is 3.5 inches, this width will not go out of style.
  6. The width of a tie should be approximately the same width of the jacket's lapel.
  7. The knot of the tie should be proportional to the collar, it should not be too big where it spreads the collar or forces it open and it shouldn't be too small that it becomes lost in the collar.
  8. The colour of your tie should not clash with your outfit but the colours should not be so similar that they fade into the suit.
  9. The main colour of a patterned tie should complement your suit and the secondary colour should pick up your shirt.
  10. The texture of the tie should go with your outfit, for instance a shiny silk tie should go with a shiny silk shirt and a wool tie should be worn with a wool suit.

He said, "I'm going to chop off the bottom of one of your trouser legs and put it in a library." I thought, "That's a turn-up for the books."  [Tommy Cooper, 1922-1984]
